• PRE NEIN. during this time, essek tends to be more calculating, passive aggressive, and assumes everyone is out to get him.• POST NEIN. during this time, essek tends to be kinder and guilt-ridden.
• GENERAL DND. essek's a prince from an underdark kingdom called the dynasty; a society who used to be brainwashed by lolth. he's one of the lead developers of dunamancy, a school of magic that is heavily influenced by some artifacts called the beacons. many consider them divine, and this reverence limits what studies are permitted. the only aid essek could find were some mages from a nearby human kingdom, the empire. essek secretly stole two beacons for the mages to study, resulting in a war when the empire was blamed.essek met a group of travelling mercenaries whose influence changed him for the better. with the mercenaries' help, the war was ended. they discovered what he'd done, and were horrified. essek had a breakdown, gave up his position as heir, and bolted. he now lives under different aliases, doing good where he can.
• WITCH. this verse serves as an add on to either his main one, or his general dnd one. trigger warning for attempted suicide.after essek begins his life on the run, he spirals deeper and deeper into his guilt. he attempts to take his own life, when an entity (verse dependent) stops him. they say he's taking the easy way out, and curse him to not age or die until he's saved twice as many people as those who died in the war.approximately one hundred years later, essek's curse ends. he's spent several years predominantly in solitude, and has grown skilled in nature based magic in addition to his previous skillset. he lives in a cottage on the outskirts of town, where those in need can visit him for aid.

• TRAVELLING WITH THE NEIN. after a series of unfortunate events, essek finds himself caught by the iron shepherds. with the aid of the mighty nein (who he meets then and there), he breaks free in time to help them kill lorenzo. his time with the shepherds leaves him feeling deeply humiliated and vulnerable. after that, he can’t stomach going back to the dens. he procrastinates on returning for a long time, telling the nein his name is dezran thain, and frequently disguising himself.
